Chapter 48

“How so?” Hailey raised an eyebrow and asked.

“Other girls in this situation would have already thrown themselves into their boyfriend's arms, whining and

begging for a hug.” Owen lightly tapped her forehead and answered.

Hailey replied, “Is that your type? | can learn if you like.”

Owen's interest was piqued, and he chuckled, “Go on, letsee you try”

Hailey cleared her throat, recalling how girls acted coquettishly in online videos.

She let out a soft whimper, deliberately exaggerating her tone, and whined, “Owen, my hand hurts so much...”

As soon as she finished speaking, Hailey felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her.

She immediately shook her head and

Owen burst into laughter, unable to hold back his amusement. He chuckled, “You did quite well! Con, call

Hailey’s face flushed red, and she refused, “No way, it is way too cringy.”

“Just once,” Owen softened his voice and urged.

The mood shifted-it was now Owen who was acting coy.

Hailey arched an eyebrow and asked, “How about you act cute forinstead?”

Owen raised an eyebrow, his expression one of disbelief, as if he had just discovered a new side of Hailey.

“In bed, you can makecall you anything you like, but not now.” He leaned in, his voice low and seductive as

he added, “If | say it now, it will not be as exciting later.”

Hailey’s face turned a deep shade of red at his teasing. She was left speechless, only managing to mutter under

her breath, “Shameless.”

Owen grinned mischievously. “Why would | need shwhen | have you?”

Hailey simply turned her back to him, ignoring him altogether.

Unbothered, Owen wrapped his arms around her from behind, pressing a soft kiss onto her hair. “Go to sleep,” he

said.

Hailey tilted her head slightly and asked, “Are you tired?”

Owen's exhaustion was evident in his expression. He let out a faint hum in response.

Hailey immediately felt a pang of sympathy for him. “Then get srest,” she urged.

Owen closed his eyes and quickly drifted off to sleep.

He fell asleep almost instantly-he must have been truly exhausted.

Hailey curled up in his embrace, set an alarm on her phone, and then slowly closed her eyes, falling back asleep.

The room was filled with warmth and tranquility.

Outside the hospital ward, Christopher sat in his wheelchair, gazing through the transparent glass window at the

picturesque scene inside.

A man and a woman, nestled together in sleep-it was such a beautiful sight.

So beautiful that it made him want to take it for himself.

Christopher suppressed the desire stirring in his heart, lowered his head, and slowly wheeled himself back to his

room.

The next morning. Owen had a flight at eight. Before going to bed the night before, Hailey had set an alarm for

six. However, when she woke up, daylight was already streaming in through the windows, and the space beside

her was empty. On the bedside table, there was breakfast and a small note.

The note read: “Good morning. | turned off your alarm so my little sleepyhead could sleep in. By the tyou

wake up, | should already be on the plane. | will call you after | land. Remember to eat breakfast.”

Hailey could not help but smile foolishly. She carefully put the note away before getting out of bed to freshen up.

After washing up, she took a photo of her breakfast and sent it to Owen with the caption: [Mission

accomplished.]

As she ate, she repeatedly glanced at the note and his message, feeling as though her heart was overflowing

with sweetness.

Hailey thought, ‘This is what being in love should feel like.

‘Fulfillment. Happiness.

Not like her past life, where she had to beg humbly, always afraid of doing something wrong.

A good relationship should make one feel happy, not fearful and cautious.

Just as she was finishing breakfast, Owen called.

The two of them chatted for a long while until Hailey heard English being spoken on Owen’s end.

Owen said, “Hailey, | have to go into a meeting. | will call you after it is over.”

“No worries. You go ahead. My fever has subsided, and | will be discharged soon,” Hailey replied.

“Alright,” Owen answered, and after exchanging goodbyes, they hung up.

Hailey then went downstairs to complete her discharge procedures.

That was when she ran into the Blackwell family.

Christopher still looked unwell-his fever had yet to subside. He sat in his wheelchair, dressed in a hospital gown,

looking pale and listless.

Beside him stood a man and a woman, and Hailey had seen the woman before.

She was Christopher's mother. Hailey had met her at a banquet once.

Back then, she had not thought much of the woman, but now she realized she was far worse than she had

imagined.

As Hailey approached, she overheard the woman shouting, “A simple fever, and you still cannot treat him

properly? What is

the point of this lousy hospital? If my son ends up with any complications, can your hospital afford the

consequences?”

The young nurse at the reception seemed new, visibly timid, and overwhelmed by the scene.

“Of course! He is my son. How could | not love him?” Samantha responded.

“Then why are you covering for the real culprit behind his accident?” Hailey asked bluntly, showing no intention

of mincing words.

Samantha and the man beside Christopher immediately tensed.

If Hailey’s guess was correct, that man had to be Christopher's older brother, Randolph Blackwell.

“Miss Dalton, you should be careful with your words. Reckless accusations are not appropriate,” Randolph said

smoothly.

He was over thirty, dressed impeccably-yet beneath the polished appearance was a beast.

Hailey let out a casual “Oh.” “My apologies. | was merely repeating what | had heard. | should not have
