Chapter 156

Finnian studied Amara's expression carefully, asking, "Did something happen between your mom and Fiona?"

If there wasn't sserious bad blood, Amara wouldn't have exploded like that just now.

"Yeah," Amara responded, nodding. "Fiona was indirectly responsible for my mom's death."

Even after all these years, it seemed like everyone had forgotten about the deep- seated grudge between her

mom and Fiona.

You know how it went-people were quick to celebrate the new and forget the old. Everyone remembered Fiona

for her grace and poise, while the memory of Amara's mother, now just cold bones in the ground, was left to

fade away.

At that moment, Finnian's question brought a flood of memories back, and Amara had to fight the sudden urge to

cry.

"Hey, don't cry."

Finnian noticed her red-rimmed eyes, doing his best to ignore the pang of discomfort that stirred within him.

"Sometimes it's best to leave the past where it belongs."

"No, | can't. | won't forget!"

Though she hadn't lived through those events herself, Amara had grown up under the harsh treatment of Elowen

and Fiona, all the while listening to her nanny recount tales of past grievances.

Slowly, she'd built up an image of her mother as kind and gentle, but tragically vulnerable. So, the seeds of

hatred had long since planted themselves deep in her heart, and forgetting wasn't an option.

But there was no need to delve into all of this with Finnian. In a quiet voice, Amara murmured, "Sorry for losing

my cool earlier. I'm heading out now. | can make my own way back, no need to trouble yourself."

With that, Amara turned to leave. This time, Finnian didn't stop her, merely

watching her retreating figure with a newfound curiosity.

Back in her apartment, Amara was utterly exhausted. She collapsed onto the

couch without even bothering to change her clothes.

After lying there for a good half-hour,

she suddenly remembered

something important she'd

forgotten. Sitting up, she fished out her phone and dialed Finnian's number.

"Mr. Everly."

Once the call connected, Amara began, "I forgot to ask earlier—when exactly can we finalize the divorce?"

Gone was the fiery anger she'd shown towards Elowen and Fiona; now her voice was cautious, almost tentative.

There was a pause on the other end. "Didn't | tell you? It depends on my mood."

Amara bit her lip. She'd planned to discuss the divorce with Finnian at the hospital earlier, but in the heat of the

moment, arguing with Fiona and her daughter had made her forget all about it.

"Mr. Everly, I'm sure Ms. Porter wouldn't want this dragging on. For her sake, and

the baby's, we should hurry up with this divorce, don't you think?"

Finnian stood by his office's floor-to-ceiling windows, a small smile playing on his lips.

"You don't need to worry about Liliana and me. Focus on your own matters first."

With that, he hung up abruptly. He could just imagine Amara's

expression at the moment; shat

be staring at her phone in disbelief, maybe even a tad miffed.

Finnian squinted his eyes, feeling rather pleased; he then returned to his desk to get back to work.

Meanwhile, Amara gripped her phone, seething with frustration. But against Finnian's stubbornness, she was at a

loss.

Just then, a knock sounded at her door. She peered through the peephole and, seeing it was Keith, opened up.

"How's Larry doing?" Keith asked as he stepped inside and closed the door.

Amara gave him a brief rundown, and Keith, after hearing the details, cursed at Larry before sinking onto the

couch.

"You got no plans tonight?" Amara asked. "What brings you over here all of a sudden?"
